Job Title: Library Assistant
Hours: Up to 10 hours per week, with two Friday shifts and two Saturday shifts monthly
Pay Rate: $10.00 per hour

Position Summary: Serving our community is the heart of our library. The Genesee Area Library is seeking a part-time library assistant. This position is under the direct supervision of the Library Director and will assist in a variety of tasks relating to library services. You will help ensure a positive experience for all patrons and connect them with good books, promoting library services and library programs. In addition to helping patrons, you’ll also be asked to help maintain the collection, as well as help to create, plan, and execute library programs for our children and youth patrons. Tasks include, but are not limited to, providing reader advisory, reference assistance, basic computer assistance, assisting patrons with registering for library cards, answering questions about library accounts, and solving problems in a friendly and efficient manner. Schedule includes days and a minimum of two Friday shifts and two Saturday shifts per month.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school Diploma or Equivalent
Ability to interact with and assist the public in a friendly manner
Reliable transportation
Good Communication skills
Ability to work without direct supervision
Familiar with MS office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc)
Must be flexible in work scheduling.

Responsibilities:

Helping patrons locate library materials.
Take material requests and process system loans/inter-library loans.
Check-in, check-out, and shelving books.
Assist patrons with reference questions, internet access and other technology needs.
Assist patrons with computer usage and printing of documents.
Register new patrons and maintain/update patron files as necessary.
Inspecting the condition of books before and after checkout.
Answering inquiries at the desk and via phone or email.
Assisting with library events as needed
Promote library programs with patrons.

Additional Notes: The following clearances must be obtained by applicant prior to hire date and a copy is required for your personnel file Clearances must be renewed every 60 months. You will not be reimbursed for the out-of-pocket cost of these clearances.

  • Criminal History from the Pa State Police
  • Child Abuse History Clearance from the Pa Dept of Human Services
  • Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the FBI
  • Mandated Reporter training must be completed within one year of hire date.
